Hypertension

 Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

What is Hypertension? Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a condition where the blood flows through the arteries with more force than usual. This causes the artery walls to thicken, damage, and increases the risk of serious health issues such as heart failure, stroke, and kidney problems

Causes of Hypertension in Older Adults:

1. Age: As people age, their blood vessels tend to stiffen and lose elasticity, leading to an increase in blood pressure.

2. Genetics: A family history of hypertension increases the likelihood of developing high blood pressure.

3. Lifestyle Factors: Poor diet (high in salt), lack of physical activity, and excessive alcohol consumption are major contributors to hypertension.

4. Obesity: Being overweight or obese is also a significant factor in the development of hypertension.

Symptoms of Hypertension:

Headaches

Dizziness

Shortness of breath

Fatigue

Chest pain (in severe cases

Prevention and Treatment of Hypertension:

1. Eat a Healthy Diet: Reduce salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats. Eat more fruits, vegetables, and high-fiber foods.

2. Exercise Regularly: Engage in physical activities like walking, swimming, or cycling for at least 30 minutes three times a week.

3. Maintain a Healthy Weight: Losing excess weight can help reduce blood pressure.

4. Medication: People with high blood pressure often use medications such as ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, diuretics, and calcium channel blockers to control their condition.
